Subscription Cost Audit

Most people guess their subscriptions cost a little each month. Add up every plan at its yearly price and the real number is usually higher, because annual renewals, family add-ons and forgotten trials never show up on one screen.

List each plan with its price and billing cycle, mark it Keep, Review or Cancel, and the tool shows your monthly and yearly total, the charges due in the next 30 days, and what cancelling saves you in a year. Your list stays in your browser, and you can download it as a spreadsheet file.

Find every subscription before you add them up

A tracker only works if the list is complete. Check these places in one sitting:

  1. Card and bank statements: scroll back three months so you catch quarterly charges. Annual plans need a 12-month look.
  2. Apple: on iPhone, open Settings › your name › Subscriptions. See how to cancel Apple-billed subscriptions.
  3. Google Play: open the Play Store, tap your profile picture, then Payments & subscriptions › Subscriptions. See how to cancel Google Play subscriptions.
  4. PayPal: look for automatic payments in your PayPal settings.
  5. Your inbox: search for renewal and receipt emails. In Gmail, paste subject:(receipt OR renewal OR subscription) newer_than:1y into the search bar, or build your own search with the Gmail Cleanup Search Builder.

How the totals are worked out

BilledTimes per yearExample priceYearly cost
Weekly524.99259.48
Monthly1215.49185.88
Every 3 months429.00116.00
Every 6 months245.0090.00
Yearly199.0099.00

The monthly figure is the yearly cost divided by 12, so a yearly plan counts toward your monthly total even in months it does not charge. Saved per year by cancelling adds up only the plans you mark Cancel. Plans left on Review are shown separately so they do not get forgotten.

Download the spreadsheet version

If you prefer Excel or Google Sheets, download the free Subscription Cost Audit spreadsheet (.xlsx, no sign-up). It has the same columns, dropdowns for billing cycle, payment method and decision, and totals that update as you type. Charges due within 30 days turn red, and rows marked Cancel are highlighted. To use it in Google Sheets, upload it to Google Drive and open it with Sheets.

Cancel the right way

  • Cancel with whoever bills you. Deleting an app does not stop an Apple or Google Play subscription, and closing an account page does not always stop a card charge.
  • Check the end date. Most plans keep working until the end of the period you paid for, so cancel before the next charge date the tool shows.
  • Keep the proof. Save the cancellation email or a screenshot, then check the next statement.
  • If a company makes it hard, follow the steps in how to cancel a subscription that makes it hard to cancel.
