Phone videos are big. A few minutes of 4K footage can take more space than hundreds of photos, so a handful of clips from a wedding or a school play can fill a phone on their own. Deleting them is easy; keeping them safely somewhere else takes a few extra checks.
Copy the videos to a computer, drive or second service, play the copies all the way through with sound, then remove them from the phone. With Google Photos, use Free up space after backup completes. With iCloud Photos, use Optimize iPhone Storage. Deleting a synced video deletes it from the cloud too.
Free tool: the video storage calculator shows how much space your videos take at each camera setting and what switching settings would save.
Find the biggest videos
- iPhone: Photos › Collections › Media Types › Videos. For a size view, Settings › General › iPhone Storage shows whether Photos is the largest category.
- Android: Files by Google › Clean › Large files, or Google Photos › Collections › Videos. On Samsung, Settings › Battery and device care › Storage › Large files.
Start with the longest clips you no longer need on the phone.
Pick the right way to remove them
Google Photos Undo backup does the opposite of what you want here: it removes the cloud copies and leaves the phone files (Google).
Copy videos to a computer or drive
- Create a dated folder on a computer or external drive with enough free space.
- Unlock the phone and connect a data-capable USB cable. On Android, choose File transfer from the USB notification. On iPhone, tap Trust and import with Photos (Mac) or the Photos app (Windows).
- Copy, do not move, the videos.
- If a video is stored only in the cloud, download the full original first.
- Keep a second copy of irreplaceable footage on another drive or service.
Check every important clip
| Check | Why |
|---|---|
| Play the start, middle and end | Interrupted transfers often cut the end of long files |
| Listen to the sound | Some players show the picture but fail on the audio |
| Compare the length | A copy shorter than the original is incomplete |
| Open on the device you will watch on | iPhone HEVC (.mov) videos may not play on older Windows PCs without an extension |
If an iPhone video will not play on Windows, install Microsoft’s HEVC video extension, or set Settings › Camera › Formats to Most Compatible for future videos (Apple). Do not delete the phone copy until a copy plays.
Remove the phone copies
Google Photos: wait for Backup complete, then tap your profile picture › Free up space (Google). This reduces phone storage, not Google Account storage.
iCloud Photos: turn on Optimize iPhone Storage. To remove videos from iCloud as well, follow the iCloud photo guide.
Own drive only: delete the checked videos from the phone, then empty Recently Deleted (iPhone) or Trash / Bin (Android) so the space is released.
Trim long clips instead of deleting them
Often you only want ten seconds of a five-minute clip. Trimming keeps the moment and frees most of the space.
- iPhone: open the video › Edit, drag the yellow handles, then tap Done › Save Video as New Clip. The new clip is separate, so delete the long original afterwards if you no longer need it.
- Google Photos: open the video › Edit, trim, then choose Save copy. Delete the original once you are happy with the copy.
Saving over the original keeps the full file underneath on iPhone, so it may not free space. Saving a new clip and deleting the original does.
Videos hiding in other apps
Not every large video is in your photo library:
| Where | How to clear it |
|---|---|
| WhatsApp and other chat apps | Manage storage in the app, covered in the WhatsApp storage guide |
| Netflix, YouTube, Prime Video downloads | The app’s Downloads screen |
| Screen recordings | Photos › Media Types › Screen Recordings on iPhone |
| Editing apps (CapCut, InShot, iMovie) | Project lists inside each app; exported videos also sit in Photos |
Videos that will not copy
- Not enough space: check free space on the destination.
- File too large for the drive: drives formatted as FAT32 cannot hold files over 4 GB. Use a drive formatted as exFAT, NTFS or APFS, or copy over the network. Reformatting erases a drive, so only do it on an empty one.
- Upload limits: cloud and chat services have their own size limits; check the service before relying on it.
Shoot smaller from now on
On iPhone, Settings › Camera › Record Video sets resolution and frame rate; 1080p at 30 fps uses far less space than 4K at 60 fps. Android camera apps have similar settings. The phone storage guide covers the rest of the phone, and the photo backup guide covers photos.
