How to free up phone storage on iPhone and Android, in a safe order

A “storage full” warning tends to arrive when you need the phone most: at a concert, at the airport, halfway through an update. The quick fixes people reach for, deleting random photos or installing a cleaner app, cost more than they save.

Find out what is actually full, then remove the things you can get back before you touch anything you can’t. On most phones that means offline downloads first, then large videos you have copied elsewhere, then message attachments and unused apps. Photos come last, and only after you have a verified copy.

Free tool: the video storage calculator shows how much space your videos take at each camera setting and what switching settings would save.

Phone storage or cloud storage

Phones show two different kinds of storage warning, and they need opposite fixes.

If the warning names iCloud or Google, use the cloud storage guide. The rest of this page is about the phone itself.

See what is using the space

  1. iPhone: open Settings › General › iPhone Storage. Wait for the bar to finish calculating.
  2. Pixel and most Android phones: open Settings › Storage.
  3. Samsung Galaxy: open Settings › Battery and device care › Storage (called Device care on older models).
  4. Write down the free space and the two largest categories. That gives you a before-and-after number and stops you guessing.

A few long videos or offline films often outweigh thousands of small photos. Your own breakdown decides where to start.

Clear space in this order

The order runs from things you can get back in seconds to things you could lose for good.

1. Remove offline downloads

Streaming, music, podcast, map and course apps keep offline copies that can run to several gigabytes. Open each app’s Downloads screen and remove what you have finished with. Removing a download does not cancel the subscription or delete your account.

2. Sort the Downloads folder

  • iPhone: Files app › Browse › On My iPhone › Downloads.
  • Android: the Files app (Files by Google on Pixel) or My Files › Downloads on Samsung.

Open anything with a vague name before deleting it. A file called download.pdf can be a ticket, receipt or contract.

3. Move large videos off the phone

Copy long videos to a computer, external drive or second cloud service. Play the copy, with sound, before you delete the phone version. If iCloud Photos or Google Photos backup is on, deleting from the phone can also delete the backed-up copy, so read the large video guide first. Then empty Recently Deleted (iPhone) or Trash / Bin (Android), because deleted items keep using space until then.

4. Clear chat attachments

Group chats collect videos, voice notes and forwarded images. On iPhone, go to iPhone Storage › Messages › Review Large Attachments. In WhatsApp, use Settings › Storage and data › Manage storage. WhatsApp media saved to your gallery is a separate copy and needs its own review; the WhatsApp guide covers both.

5. Offload or archive apps you rarely use

Both platforms can remove an app while keeping your data:

PlatformKeeps your dataRemoves everything
iPhoneOffload App in iPhone StorageDelete App
Android (recent versions)Archive (or Play Store Automatically archive apps)Uninstall

Archived and offloaded apps keep their icon and come back with one tap, as long as the app is still in the store (Apple, Google). Check password managers, authenticators and banking apps before removing anything. The app review guide walks through that check.

6. Shrink the photo library last

ServiceFrees phone space and keeps the cloud copyDeletes everywhere
iCloud PhotosOptimize iPhone StorageDeleting a photo in Photos
Google PhotosFree up space on this device after backup completesDeleting a backed-up photo in Google Photos

Apple and Google document both controls. If you use both services, check both libraries before a bulk cleanup. Clearing duplicate photos and old screenshots is quicker than reviewing the whole library.

Platform guides

Storage is still full after cleanup

  • Reopen the storage screen and give it a few minutes to recalculate.
  • Empty Recently Deleted or Trash in Photos, Files and your gallery app.
  • Check whether an app has downloaded its offline content again.
  • Check whether a photo backup is still uploading. Free up space and Optimize only work on items that finished uploading.
  • If System Data or System is the largest category, follow the phone maker’s guidance. Skip third-party cleaner apps; Android’s own tools and Files by Google already clear junk files.

Keep the space you won back

Once a month, remove finished downloads, move the month’s videos off the phone and empty the trash folders. Before a trip, check that your backup completed so you can clear space on the road without worry.
