Your Android phone keeps showing “Account storage is full” from Google, even though the phone itself has plenty of room. That message is about your Google Account in the cloud, and clearing your phone’s Downloads folder will not touch it.
Open Gmail, Drive or Google Photos, tap your profile picture, then Manage storage. Check which service uses the most, and clean that one. Be careful in the Google One cleanup screens: Drive and Gmail items deleted there are gone for good, while Photos items go to Trash first.
Free tool: the cloud storage calculator shows how much iCloud, Google or Dropbox storage you need now and in a year, and which plan fits.
Phone storage or Google Account storage
| Warning | What is full | Where to fix it |
|---|---|---|
| Phone storage, from Settings › Storage | The phone’s own memory | The Android storage guide |
| “Account storage is full” from Gmail, Drive, Photos or Google One | Your Google Account (15 GB free, shared) | Keep reading |
| A work or school account | Your organization’s quota | Ask your administrator |
If you have more than one Google Account on the phone, note which email the warning names. Cleaning the wrong account changes nothing.
Open Google’s storage manager
- Open Gmail, Google Drive or Google Photos.
- Tap your profile picture at the top right. Tap the down arrow to switch account if needed.
- Tap Manage storage or the cloud icon showing the percentage used. This opens Google One’s storage manager.
- Tap Usage details to see how much Gmail, Drive and Photos each use.
- If you are already over the limit, a banner shows a cleanup target: the amount you need to free, including photos still waiting to upload from this phone (Google).
Clean the biggest service
Before you swipe: download anything from Drive or Gmail you might want, because this screen skips Trash for those two services. For more control, clean each service in its own app instead:
| Biggest service | Where to clean it | Guide |
|---|---|---|
| Google Photos | Photos › profile › Photos settings › Backup › Manage storage | Google Photos storage guide |
| Google Drive | Drive on a computer › Storage | Google Drive guide |
| Gmail | Search has:attachment larger:10M, then empty Spam and Trash | Gmail storage guide |
WhatsApp and phone backups
Android backups and WhatsApp chat backups use the same Google Account storage.
- WhatsApp backup: open the Google One app › Storage, scroll to Clean up other items › WhatsApp, and tap Delete backup under the one you want to remove (Google). WhatsApp makes a new backup at its next scheduled time unless you change WhatsApp › Settings › Chats › Chat backup. Never delete the backup you would need to restore chats on a new phone. The WhatsApp storage guide covers the media side.
- Device backups: old phones you no longer use can leave backups behind. Check the backups list in the Google One app before deleting one, and keep the backup of the phone you use now.
Watch for pending uploads
If Google Photos backup has been paused by the full account, it restarts the moment space appears. A day of photos can fill what you just cleared. The cleanup target counts pending uploads from this phone only, not from other phones or tablets on the same account. Decide what still needs to back up before freeing space.
Check the result
- Reopen Manage storage and compare with the figure you started with.
- Google says large cleanups can take 48 to 72 hours to show fully.
- Signing out or removing the account from the phone does not free any storage.
- Open a few files you downloaded to confirm they work.
When cleanup is not enough
If every remaining item is something you want to keep online, a Google One plan is the straightforward fix. The alternative is moving older photos and files to a computer or drive you control, with a second copy for anything irreplaceable. The cloud storage overview compares both.
