You unlock the phone to check the weather and twenty minutes later you are three apps deep in something else. A busy Home Screen does that: every icon is an invitation, and the one you came for is on page four.
Keep one Home Screen page with the apps you use daily, send everything else to the App Library, and set new downloads to App Library Only. Removing an icon from the Home Screen keeps the app installed. You can rebuild your layout in about 15 minutes and undo any step.
The one-page layout
Daily apps are the ones you would miss within a day: messages, camera, maps, calendar, your bank. Anything you open weekly or less belongs in a folder or the App Library.
Step 1: Clear the page without deleting anything
- Touch and hold an empty area of the Home Screen until the icons jiggle.
- For any app that is not a daily app, tap the minus sign on its icon, or touch and hold the app and tap Remove App.
- Choose Remove from Home Screen. The app moves to the App Library and stays installed.
- Choose Delete App only if you want the app and its data gone. That is a different decision, covered in the app review guide.
Step 2: Arrange what is left
- Drag your four most-used apps into the Dock at the bottom.
- Put the next-most-used apps on the first page, in the lower half where your thumb reaches easily.
- Drag one app onto another to make a folder. Name it by task, such as Travel, Money or Home. Folders named by color or by “Misc” turn into a second junk drawer.
- Add at most one or two widgets you actually read, such as Calendar or Weather. Touch and hold the background, tap Edit, then Add Widget.
Step 3: Hide the extra pages
- Touch and hold the background, then tap the dots above the Dock (on some versions, tap Edit › Edit Pages).
- Untick the pages you no longer need. Hidden pages are kept, not deleted, and you can switch them back on later.
- Tap Done.
With extra pages hidden, the App Library is one or two swipes away (Apple).
Step 4: Stop new apps cluttering the page
Go to Settings › Home Screen & App Library and choose App Library Only. New downloads then land in the App Library instead of on your Home Screen. On the same screen, Show in App Library controls whether notification badges appear there.
Find any app in seconds
| To find | Do this |
|---|---|
| Any installed app | Swipe down on the Home Screen and type its name, or search at the top of the App Library |
| An app you removed from the page | Swipe left past your last page to the App Library; it sorts apps into categories automatically |
| An app on a hidden page | Unhide the page, or search for it |
| An app you hid with Face ID | Open the Hidden folder at the bottom of the App Library and authenticate |
App Library categories are automatic. You can move an app from the App Library back to the Home Screen, but you cannot move it into a different category (Apple).
Lock or hide a private app
To keep an app away from people who borrow your phone, touch and hold it and tap Require Face ID (or Touch ID or Passcode). Choose Hide and Require Face ID to move it into the Hidden folder as well. Apps that came with the iPhone cannot be hidden, and the hidden setting applies to that iPhone only (Apple).
Start over if it gets messy
Settings › General › Transfer or Reset iPhone › Reset › Reset Home Screen Layout puts Apple’s apps back on the first page and lists downloaded apps alphabetically after them. Your folders are removed, but no app or data is deleted.
A tidy page is not a quiet phone
A clean Home Screen hides icons; it does not stop alerts or free storage. Pair it with the notification guide to silence noisy apps and the iPhone storage guide if space is the problem.
Steps checked against Apple Support in November 2026 (iOS 26 and iOS 27). Menu names can shift slightly between iOS versions.
